Remember the naked man I saw my last week in Iquique?? I just got an email
from my trainer and HE HAS A FECHA!!
So awesome. I cannot believe that VanMeter goes home in a WEEK!
Mom wants to hear more about the spiritual side of what´s been going down,
so no funny stories this week everyone!
As I have been reading 20 pages a day in the Book of Mormon (i convinced
our district leader that we should all finish together on tuesday at our
district meeting) I have mainly noticed how much Christ loves his children and
the urgency that the Book of Mormon prophets felt to get us to follow the simple
steps of the Gospel of Jesus Christ! We can learn a lot of things in the
Book of Mormon, but what it all really boils down to is the 5 steps of the
Gospel of Jesus Christ. Whenever my companion and I invite someone to be
baptized, we review these steps and ask, ¨do these steps seem difficult? (of
course not) ¨Will you follow the example of Jesus Christ and be baptized..?¨
Missionary work really all comes down to helping people understand what
Christ wants them to do on the Earth and that He wants them to do it so that
they can be happy!¨
But there are definitely times that we fail trying to help them understand
this. We had an investigator this week, Leo, who was enjoying the fruits
of coming unto Christ and then decided to get drunk instead of going to church.
When we met with him later yesterday afternoon, he was still totally out
of it mentally and when we tried to show him the differences in his life because
of his decisions, he got mad and is now not meeting with us. Same thing
happened with Yino, our baptism from a couple weeks ago. We think he has
started drinking again and stopped going to church. We can see so much
light that has gone out of him, but all he can see is the darkness of his life
and for some reason he won´t let us help him get out of it. It´s a really
sad thing to see. It´s an amazing thing to see someone accept the gospel
of Jesus Christ because their countenance changes- but it works both ways.
But much is good. I had the chance to talk to the bishop of my ward
for awhile while lunch was heating up and he is such an amazing person! He
and his family truly are the gospel and I am so inspired by them. His
conversion story is one that makes you want to never pass someone up because of
failure to live the commandments. And now he just works so hard to keep
this little ward together and closer and closer to perfection. He knows
who every convert and member is and visits them personally. It is a great
ward, although few in number.
I´m sorry this email kind of stinks. There´s one huge internet place
in Copiapó and about this time about half of us are here. Which usually is
okay except for we just got an email from President with rule changes and
everyone is kind of freaking out about it. The craziest one for us is that
the area presidency wants us to split the sectors geographically instead of
having multiple missionaries in all parts. I understand it but I have NO
IDEA how we´re going to split it. There´s a rich half that is really hard
to work in and a poor half that is more receptive and that also means that we
split the members as well. Rough. But we shall carry on!
I love the gospel. Thanks to those who have written me! I love
you all!
